William Clarke Quantrill Society - formed in the 1980s with many members descended from Quantrill members. Takes queries.

Civil War Music of the Western Border - by Cathy Barton and Dave Para. Not strictly music of the Western Border. This is a strange and fascinating site that starts with a picture of a wax recreation of the head of Quantrill. The main focus of the site is music, with lyrics you can read, or songs you can download and listen to. Check especially for songs by St. Louis resident Joseph Leddy (mentioned on this site's Gratiot Street Prison page).

Ladies Union Aid Society - a site about the Union women of St. Louis who worked (primarily) in the hospitals.

Missouri Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States - Descendents of Union Officers who served in the Civil War in Missouri. A huge amount of links to other sites.

Missouri Historical Society - in St. Louis, Missouri

State Historical Society of Missouri - in Columbia, Missouri

Missouri State Archives - in Jefferson City, Missouri

St. Louis Public Library - A huge amount of information is indexed on-line with instructions on how to obtain copies. They add more regularly so keep checking back.

Catholic Cemeteries of St. Louis - by the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This excellent new site (still partially under construction) has a search function to search Catholic burials in St. Louis with names, death dates, ages, and cross-references to others buried nearby--an extremely valuable genealogical and historical tool. Also included are extensive visual tours of historically important and interesting sites in the cemeteries.

Library of Congress - American Memories site from the Library of Congress contains pictures, maps, and documents from America's past including quite a bit relating to Missouri. Particular collections to look at include Maps, Lincoln Papers (one of the treasures of this site is the letters from Missouri people, and the newspaper clippings related to Missouri Lincoln kept), Sheet Music, First-Person Narratives of the American South (only a few relate to Missouri but many are worth reading). There's much more.

National Archives and Records Administration - Remember the scene at the end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when the ark is pushed into the vast government warehouse never to be found again? The National Archives has created a web site much like that warehouse. Yet, if you hunt through it (and employ an external search engine like Google) you can find enormous amounts of information. Of key interest are the indexes to the Civil War microfilm archives, including service records for USA and CSA soldiers

Making of America from the University of Michigan

Making of America from Cornell University - These are two sites with the same name but somewhat different content. Both include the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion and the Navy Official Records. They also include a searchable collection of 1800s magazines, many with Civil War content, including articles by many of the participants. Look especially for Century Magazine.

Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System - a growing database of all Civil War soldiers from the National Park Service based on National Archives records. Includes prisoner listings from Andersonville and Fort McHenry.

Jews in the Civil War - an excellent site covering both Union and Confederate Jews who participated in the War. Many participants from the Trans-Mississippi area.

Tennessee and the Civil War - includes a great deal of information, searchable indexes, and links to information on Tennessee soldiers and POWs.

Old West Kansas - Bleeding Kansas, focus of the Border War with Missouri. Links to numerous related history sites.

Books of the Kansas Collection - full on-line texts of numerous valuable resources. Books on early settlement, on the Lawrence raid, etc.

American Civil War Homepage - surprisingly few Missouri links, but a lot from other areas and on general subjects

Ancestry.com - This is a paid subscription service. For me it's been well worth the price. They have an enormous amount of information available, easily searchable. You'll find indexes to Civil War military service records, birth and death records, census indexes... Missouri records are among the most complete and thorough with Civil War era St. Louis records of marriages and deaths/burials very well covered. This is always my first research and genealogy stop for anyone I'm looking for.

Ancestry.com adds new databases every day. They now have the entire US census available on-line for a very reasonable subscription rate.

Family Search - A site by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons). This searchable on-line database covers Missouri quite thoroughly (which is understandable if you're familiar with Mormon history). Included are birth, death, and marriage records. Also check the catalog of materials available at the Family History Library. If you have a LDS Family History Center near you (which they generously allow non-church members to use) you can order the microfilm/fiche materials to view at a small fee.

Genealogy in St. Louis - This site by Dave Lossos contains maps, indexes, lists of surnames, and links to research sources Included are census ward maps which are very helpful in using Ancestry.com's census images, and a very promising upcoming project on the 1930 census. A valuable resource is the search engine that searches the St. Louis Public Library on-line listings and information.

Missouri Birth & Death Records Database Still in its early stages but with many records for Missouri already online.

new Grand Army of the Republic. Department of Illinois. Transcription of the Death Rolls, 1879-1947 - a new publication now available with 32,000 names of soldiers who served from 36 states, 537 pages link added June 16, 2003

Missouri Census Page - by Ed Mackley. Complete 1830, 1840 and 1850 Missouri censuses on-line. More to follow. Considering the amount of work and bandwidth Mackley is providing to the public for free, this site is an extremely commendable contribution.
