The Civil War in St. Louis: A Guided Tour by William C. Winter An excellent source of information about Civil War St. Louis. The book is worthwhile as an on-site tour guide with maps and directions to sites and descriptions of what is there now and what was there during the 1860s. If not planning a trip to St. Louis, it's still very good reading, putting into geographical perspective much of the history of the city. Lots of good pictures and narrative.

Missouri Civil War Reader, Volume I - now available Cost per CD ROM is $24.95 + $4.00 priority mail shipping Story of a Border City During the Civil War, by Galusha Anderson Anderson was a pastor in St. Louis just before and during the war. His church was only half a block away from Lynch's Slave Market. He offered his services as a minister to the Confederate prisoners at Gratiot, but--not surprisingly--none of their accounts mention him. Good, first-hand history by a bit of a fussbudget, but a very entertaining writer. A decidedly Union point-of-view. |
